Kevin Tillman, Army Ranger and brother of Pat Tillman, is making his feelings known of late. He recently wrote this piece posted at Truthdig.
You have to respect both Tillman and his brother for their tremendous service to this country in time of war. Certainly Tillman, who served in one of the toughest units in modern warfare, saw combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and lost his brother to "friendly fire" has a right to his opinions. And he certainly has a right to present those opinions to those who will listen.
You can read the piece and form your own conclusions. But remember that it is the opinion of one man, a soldier, who has seen the face of war.
But I hope that all of our troops aren't coming back as angry and vindictive as Tillman. And even if only part of what he says is true, then our country really is in a lot of trouble.
I don't pretend to understand everything in his rant, but he seems to have left a lot out.
Like the great work that our troops do around the world, day after day and year after year, building schools, bridges, and other infrastructure.
Like the countless millions of food, medicine and aid sent regularly around the world.
Like being the example of freedom and prosperity that the entire world has known and envied for the better part of 200 years.
We are not perfect and we are not always right.
But if there is a better plan for freedom and equality and justice out there somewhere, I don't know what it is.
God bless Tillman and every man and woman who has served this great nation of ours, for better or worse. Maybe someday it will all make sense.
